Teddy Nakimuli, Uganda’s only female boxer to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England settled for a bronze medal after losing her semifinal bout to Northern Ireland’s Carly Mc Naul on Saturday, August 6.
Nakimuli was outclassed by Mc Naul in the light flyweight bout at the National Exhibition Centre arena. She lost on unanimous decision (0-5) to the Irishwoman, who will fight India’s Zareen Nikhat in the final gold medal bout.
However, Nakimuli leaves the games with her head high after becoming the first Ugandan women boxer to win a Commonwealth medal from the boxing ring. Her semifinal exit means she comes back home with a bronze. She stormed the semifinals without breaking any sweat on August 3 after her scheduled opponent then, Sara Haghighat-Joo of Sierra Leone, failed to make the weight.
Her triumph means Team Uganda’s medal tally increases to four; two golds from Victor Kiplangat (marathon) and Jacob Kiplimo (10,000m) plus Peruth Chemutai’s bronze in 3,000m Steeplechase
