Following his recent success at the IAAF World Championships where he won a bronze medal, Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo is hot favorite to win the 10,000-metre race at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Kiplimo will lead a field of nine athletes in the highly-anticipated men’s 10,000m final set for Tuesday (August 2) night at the 18,000-seater Alexander stadium.
The 21-year-old Ugandan star is widely tipped to win a second gold medal for the country after compatriot Victor Kiplangat won the men’s marathon race last week.
However, Kiplimo faces stiff challenge from three Kenyans Daniel Simiu Ebenyo, Edward Zakayo Pingua, Kandie Kibiwott, South African Adriaan Wildschutt, Tanzania’s Joseph Panga, Scot Andrew Butchart and Australian Ky Robinson in the race.
Elsewhere, Halimah Nakaayi will be the other Ugandan runner on the track when she competes in the Heat 1 of the opening round in the women’s 800-metre race on Tuesday night.
While boxer Owen Isaac Kibira will also step in the ring against Bangladesh’s Hossan Ali in a welterweight bout in the round-of-16 at the Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
