A police officer attached to Crime Intelligence department of Katwe Police station in Kampala, together with his four family members have perished in a road accident that occurred on Saturday morning at Kyarushowe swamp along the Masaka- Kampala highway.
According to Faridah Nampiima, the traffic police spokesperson, the Toyota wish in which Bwesigye Cleopus and his family members were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with a Fuso truck reg no UBH 902U.
Nampiima said all occupants died on spot.
“The cause of the accident has been attributed to the driver of the Toyota wish who left his lane and moved to the lane of the fuso causing a head on collision killing five people who were occupants in the Toyota Wish,” she saod.
Bwesigye Cleopus’s family members have been identified as Nyagoma Silomena aged 3 years, Nyakato Falestine aged 3 years, Kiiza Darliton aged 1 year, Kemigisha Maria Gorreti, a female adult and Twesigye chripus aged 31.
The bodies have been taken to Masaka City Mortuary for postmortem examination.
“We continue to remind all road users to be vigilant while using the roads and further call upon all road users to change their attitude while using the road,” Nampiima said.
This comes after traffic report since June 2022 indicates that the daily death rate from road accidents is 12 people, which is higher than the average number of road users killed last year per day.
Ms Nampiima said that in June, traffic police registered 1,825 accidents of which 321 were fatal, 995 were serious and 509 were minor.
She added that in the first week of July, traffic police also registered 322 accidents of which 62 were fatal, 180 were serious and 86 were minor.
“The accident victims were 365 of which 89 died and 266 sustained serious injuries,” Ms Nampiima said.
The police annual crime report for 2021 showed that more road crashes were reported compared to the year 2020.
The report indicates that there was a 42 per cent increase in the number of crashes reported in 2021 from 12,249 in 2020 to 17,443 in 2021.
