Sumaya Komuntale turned villain from hero after scoring and being sent off in Uganda Crested Cranes’ 1-3 defeat to Morocco on Tuesday night at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament.

The defeat means the Crested Cranes, who lost their second group game in a row, are virtually out of the tournament. Hosts Morocco and Senegal, the 1-0 winners over Burkina Faso in a game played earlier on Tuesday progressed into the quarterfinals.

Before being red-carded for accumulating two yellow cards, Komuntale had given the Uganda Crested Cranes some hope in the match after levelling the score at 1-1 with a beautiful free-kick at half-time.

That said, the Crested Cranes put up a spirited fight against the tournament hosts but were hurt with two controversial VAR (Video Assistant referee) calls that awarded penalties to the Moroccans.

The Crested Cranes will play their final group match, a formality fixture against Burkina Faso on Friday, July 8.
