KAMPALA: Following their arrest on June 14 while protesting in downtown Kampala, former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye and political activist Samuel Lubega Makaku were remanded in Luzira Prison until July 1, 2022.
Dr Besigye was arrested in downtown Kampala on Tuesday while protesting high commodity prices and taken to Nagalama Police Station in Mukono District.
On Friday, Buganda Road Court magistrate Asuman Muhumuza denied Dr. Besigye and Mukaku bail, arguing that there is no guarantee that the two will not be arrested again on the same or other charges.
The leader of the People’s Transition Group leader is scheduled to appear in the same court Friday on the first charge of inciting violence, for which he was granted court bail last week.
Dr. Besigye is attempting to rally Ugandans in opposition to the high cost of living, which he claims is affecting vulnerable citizens. Dr. Besigye also wants the government to cut back on “wasteful spending.”
