Local football governing body, FUFA, has directed match officials to momentarily stop Sunday’s game between Vipers and Police FC after six minutes to give a standing ovation to Tonny Mawejje, who will retire from the game after two decades.
The final game, one of the final matches in this season’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League, will be played on Sunday, May 22 at the St Mary’s stadium in Kitende.
On the same evening, hosts Vipers will be crowned 2021/22 league champions after the game.
Last week, Mawejje announced his decision to retire after two decades of an outstanding playing career on the national team (The Cranes) and in different clubs.
Playing as a midfielder, Mawejje scored eight goals in 83 appearances for the Cranes. He has featured for Masaka LC, KCCA FC, URA FC and Police FC in the local topflight league. He also played for clubs in Albania, South Africa, Iceland, and Kuwait and Norway.
