Liverpool and Real Madrid will battle in the UEFA Champions League final for the third time. This is after Real Madrid overpowered Manchester City 3-1 to win 6-5 on aggregate on Wednesday night and storm the final due in Paris, France later this month.
Real Madrid will now play Liverpool in a repeat of the 1981 and 2018 Champions League finals.
Trailing 3-4 from the first leg of the semifinal tie in Manchester, Real fought back to win the return leg game 3-1 after extra-time. Before forcing the game into extra-time, Madrid were in real danger after Riyad Mahrez scored for Man City in the 72nd minute. But Rodrygo struck twice in injury time to save Real and take the game into extra-time where Karim Benzema scored the third goal to seal victory for the Spanish champions.
In the 1981 final in Paris, Liverpool beat Madrid 1-0 but Real revenged by defeating the Kop 3-1 in Kiev four years ago.
Will Liverpool, who ejected another Spanish side Villarreal (5-2) in the semifinal on Tuesday, emerge winners again in Paris? That’s the big question, which will be answered on May 28.
