KAMPALA: Another foreign national has been killed by an elephant in Uganda, barely three months after a similar incident in the country.

A Colombian researcher identified as Ramirez Amaya Sebastian, who was based at Arizona State University, was on Sunday trampled to death by the charging elephant in Kibale National Park.

UWA Spokesman Bashir Hangi said how the accident happened.

“Sebastian and his research assistant both stationed at Ngogo Research Station in Kibale National Park were carrying out their routine research activities inside the forest,” he said.

“They came across a lone elephant which charged at them forcing the duo to run in different directions. The elephant followed Sebastian and trampled on him leading to his death,” he added.

UWA says with Police they have so far retrieved Sebastian’s body for further management.

“This unfortunate incident is highly regrettable. We have not witnessed such an incident in the last 50 years of forest research in Kibale National Park. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the late Sebastian,” Hangi said.

On January 26, a Saudi Arabian national was attacked and killed by an elephant in Murchison Falls National Park.

Sayed Elshahany, was at the time travelling with three of his friends in a Toyota Wish when they stopped along the way and the deceased went out of car.

An elephant charged at him and killed him on the spot.
