This weekend’s top-of-the-table clash in the English Premier League between leaders Manchester City and second-placed Liverpool FC at the Etihad stadium is undoubtedly the biggest attraction in European football leagues.
Only one point separates the two teams, and whoever wins on Sunday (April 10) evening could move on to lift the title in May.
With eight games left, Sunday’s clash between Man City and Liverpool has all hallmarks of a final as far as the title race is concerned.
First, Man City, who have 73 points from 30 games, have had their lead over Liverpool eaten away over the last eight games to single point. This kind of situation sets the tone for the Citizens to beat Liverpool, the only realistic title challengers, and get their hands off the title.
Second, Liverpool (72 points from 30 games), can only be keep their title dream alive if they do the job themselves by defeating Pep Guardiola’s side in their backyard. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have produced a five-game winning run in recent weeks and they must beat Man City to take charge of the table for smooth home stretch to the title in May.
Thirdly, the game will bring Africa’s top strikers to the fore; pitying Algeria’s Riyadh Mahrez of Man City against the Liverpool duo of Sadio Mane and Mohammad Salah of Senegal and Egypt respectively. This could be decisive factor in this season’s title.
Going into the game, both teams are coming off victories in the mid-week UEFA Champions League ties; Man City edged Atletico Madrid 1-0 while Liverpool outmatched Benfica 3-1. The morale, therefore, is quite high in either camp.
