KAMPALA: Thomas Tayebwa is the new Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 11th Parliament. He received 379 votes, outnumbering the opposition’s Moses Okot p’Bitek, who received 82 votes.
He will deputise Anita Annet Among, who had previously been declared speaking after receiving 401 votes, defeating her opponent Asuman Basalirwa, who received only 66 votes.
Ealier on Anita Among served as deputy to the late Jacob Oulanyah.
She was the Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises in the tenth Parliament (COSASE).
Thomas Tayebwa, on the other hand, has been the government Chief Whip.
The NRM endorsed the Ruhinda North County Member of Parliament for the deputy position on Thursday.
Tayebwa was a member of the National Economy Committee and the Natural Resources Committee in the 10th Parliament.
