The Central Executive Committee of the ruling NRM has endorsed Anita Among as their flag bearer for the Speakership race that fell vacant after the passing of Speaker Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah.
Deputy Speaker Among is among 12 candidates that had expressed interest in the position on Tuesday.
But following the meeting chaired by President Museveni at State House Entebbe on Wednesday evening, Among emerged the favourite for the Committee.
“That the committee having considered the 12 names who expressed interest in the position….. recommends to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus Rt Hon Anita Among for endorsement as NRM candidate for position of speaker,” a statement from CEC signed by President Museveni as party chairman reads in part.
Sources in the committee told this website on Wednesday evening that Among impressed the committee with her presentation and manner of answering questions.
This followed interviews for all the contestants, except Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng who pulled out of the contest earlier.
Other candidates in the race were State Minister for Defence Jacob Oboth Oboth, Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi, Dokolo South County MP Felix Okot Ogong, Theodore Ssekikubo, Jackson Atima Lee, Tororo Woman MP Sarah Opendi, State Minister for Sports Hamson Obua, Alex Kintu Brandon(Kagoma North legislator), Florence Asiimwe Akiiki(Masindi district Woman MP), Okot John Amos and Pius Wakabi.
Among as NRM flag bearer for the Speakership race will be finally endorsed by NRM parliamentary caucus on Thursday and wait to contest with the opposition candidate, who will be selected on Thursday.
Election will be on Friday.
