KAMPALA: Former two-time winners, Mbale Heroes, booked a quarterfinal place in this year’s Stanbic Uganda Cup tournament after stunning Police FC 1-0 in one of the matches played Sunday, March 20.
Mbarara City FC also stormed the quarter finals after a 4-0 victory against Iganga Young FC.
Regional league side Mbale Heroes dumped premier league side Police FC in a closely-fought game at Lugogo, thanks to an 87th minute goal from substitute Bosco Kanyike.
Mbale Heroes make it to the quarter finals of the knockout tournament for the first time in 23 years, having won the trophy twice; in 1976 and 1999.
In the other game played Sunday, Mbarara City defeated Iganga Young 4-0 at Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara. Henry Kitengeni , Sadat Seiri, Solomon Okwalinga and Ronald Otti scored the goals.
Action continues Monday, March 21 with more rounds of 16 games, featuring Wakiso Giants FC against fellow Premier League side UPDF FC at the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium.
