LAMWO: As the rest of the world celebrated Women’s Day, residents of Ogako North village in Wangtit parish, Padibe East Sub County, Lamwo district spent the better part of Tuesday embarking on a rescue mission of a forty-year-old woman identified as Margret Aloyo, who was buried alive after the collapse of a sand mine on the banks of Ogako stream.
The Padibe East Sub County LCIII Chairperson Polycap Odoch confirmed the incident saying the deceased was buried inside the pit while she was trying to mine sand, a livelihood that has been embraced by residents of Ogako South and North villages.
According to Odoch, residents learned of the incident after the children of the deceased were sent to take lunch to their mother only to find heaps of soils and sand that had collapsed on her, hence alerting other residents.
After the alert, residents of Ogako village then went on a spree to dig out Aloyo, who was unfortunately found dead upon retrieval.
The retrieved body was later handed over to the police that conducted a post mortem and registered a case of accidental death at Padibe Police Station.
Sub County authorities, the police, and environment Committees have now convened a meeting to orient the sand miners to observe precautionary measures and to desist against mining in areas with hanging cliffs.
