KAMPALA: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed reports that Gen Salim Saleh is set to visit Rwanda.
The report was made by Canary Mugume, a journalist with NBS TV, via his twitter handle.
But on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said whereas the government of Uganda is in the process of mending relations with Kigali, there was no such visit planned by Gen Saleh to the country.
“For the record, there is no planned visit to Kigali by General Salim Saleh as purported by the NBS journalist through his twitter handle @CanaryMugume. The Ministry calls upon all responsible members of society to desist from circulating false information that is devoid of facts.
Uganda and Rwanda are doing everything possible to normalise their bilateral relations but are also mindful of some members of the public whose actions could derail the warm and cordial relations being cultivated between the two countries,” they said.
Mugume on Thursday said he was retracting his tweet and apologised.
The Rwandan authorities reopened the border with Uganda on January 31st, 2022 after First Son Maj Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba visited Kigali and met President Paul Kagame.
Kagame closed the borders on February 27, 2019, accusing Uganda of hosting Rwandan dissidents, abducting Rwandan nationals, and locking them in non-designated areas. Rwanda then issued a travel advisory to its nationals against travelling to Uganda, saying their safety was not guaranteed.
