KAMPALA: A task team investigating a self-styled anti-government rebel group, “The Uganda National Coalition for Change” (UNCC), on Monday, January 10, 2022, charged 15 suspects at the court martial in Makindye, Kampala with 12 various counts of treason, concealment of treason, terrorism, aggravated robbery (4 counts), murder (4 counts) and the illegal possession of firearms.
Spokesperson, CP Fred Enanga in a press statement said the suspects at diverse places in Uganda, the DRC, and in Tanzania, formed a rebel group named the Uganda National Coalition for Change (UNCC), with the intention to overthrow the elected government of Uganda through the use of force of arms. In so doing, they opened up rebel camps in Wabunyira, Kikandwa, and Kabosi village from where they attacked, killed, and also maimed Law Enforcement Officers.
In carrying out these attacks on officers, the rebels also robbed guns.
“They robbed 5 guns during the deadly attacks, out of which, 3 guns have been recovered, and two are still missing,” he said.
Those killed in the attacks included; CPL Alfred Okech, CPL Francis Nsubuga, PC Moses Kigongo, SPC Francis Ddimba, while the maimed included; Pte David Okiror and Pte Emmanuel Okirima.
Spokesperson Enanga listed the 15 charged suspects as;
1. Lugendo Stuart Savio Paul alias Kuffa Teeka a 28-year-old businessman of Kyoga village, Namusera Parish, Wakiso district.
2. Mulinda Julius alias Julio, a 32-year-old builder, and resident of Bukerekere village, in Wakiso district.
3. Nyanzi Mohammed Moshi Makumbi alias Engineer, a 31-year-old, resident of Kabusi village, Bukuya village, Kasanda district.
4. Kizito Issa alias Commander Muto, a 22 year old, vender of Kasangombe Mpunga ward, Wakiso district.
5. Agodri Godfrey alias Skywalker Ramathan, a 23-year-old bodaboda rider of Kinawa village Kisenge Parish, Kyengera TC, Wakiso district.
6. Iyamulemye Paul, an 18-year-old, resident of Nakawa East, Nakawa Division, Kampala district.
7. Bogere Alex, a 20-year-old, resident of Namagera village, Magogo sub-county, in Wakiso district.
8. Ssenyonga Bob Robert, a 23-year-old, businessman from Kinawataka, Nakawa division Kampala district.
9. Masembe John alias Nasifu, a 29-year-old, a peasant from Busimbi Railway, Mityana Municipality, Mityana district.
10. Mitti Fazio, a 30-year-old, resident of Kirombe Luzira, Nakawa Division, Kampala district.
11. Ssenyonjo Hakim, a 32-year-old, driver and resident of Kikajjo zone, Namasuba, Wakiso district.
12. Matovu Sylevster, a 21-year-old, businessman of Kisimbiri village in Wakiso district.
13. Kawuma Derrick, a 25-year-old, barber and resident of Kisimbiri village, Wakiso district.
14. Ssekayombya Tony, a 24-year-old. A resident of Kyoga village, Wakiso district.
15. Sengonzi Lwanga Sam, a 41-year-old, peasant of Kabusi village, Bukuya, Kassanda district.
With 15 suspects charged and a balance of 18 suspects being processed for court, Enanga in his concluding remarks noted that the Joint Security Agencies remain committed and determined to keep Ugandans and other citizens in the country safe, from threats of violent extremism.
“We shall continue to pursue all remnants of the rebel outfit including their sponsors and collaborators, and hold them accountable for these acts of violence, impunity, and lawlessness,” he added.
After several years of relative calm and peace, the Joint Securing Agencies started registering a slight increase, in deadly attacks against police officers and the subsequent robbery of their guns late last year. In all the attacks, security personnel were mainly targeted for their guns.
