KAMPALA: Col. Edith Nakalema, the head of the State House Anti-corruption Unit has revealed that extortion and bribery are the most forms of corruption in Uganda.
Speaking on BBS TV on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 where she was accounting to the public about the activities and accomplishments of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit 3-year journey, Col. Nakalema stressed that some of the corrupt are powerful and connected, but her unit working with other agencies had found a way around the ring.
“Some acts of corruption are syndicated from top to bottom in public offices which makes it difficult to identify. The corrupt have also advanced to sophisticated means to conceal the trail of their criminal acts,” she narrated.
Whatsoever, she assured the public that Anti-Corruption Agencies are well equipped and ready to tackle all advanced technology forms of corruption.
The Col. Edith Nakalema led Anti-Corruption unit was launched on December 10, 2018 by President Museveni to complement the fight against corruption.
The Unit has within 3-years of its existence recovered UgShs. 30 billion from inflated government projects, misappropriated funds, and from fraudsters. In addition, it has arraigned over 329 people in court, and this court figure increases day by day.
Giving final remarks, Col. Nakalema applauded the Anti-Corruption Agencies (ACAs), and the media fraternity for the continuous exposure of the corrupt.
Over the 3-years, the unit has also won public trust. “The Unit receives over 300 calls a day and this is a symbol of trust from the Public,” she said.
