KAMPALA: First Lady and Education minister Janet Kataha Museveni has appealed to principals of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and other institutions of higher learning, which were allowed to reopen in November, to ensure that they don’t relax on enforcing the Covid-19 guidelines.
According to Education and Sports Minister, Janet Museveni, Covid-19 is still with us and could spread further if safeguards are dropped.
“I call upon all tertiary institutions that even as you have re-opened to learners, do not let your guards down from observing the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for preventing the spread of the virus that causes Covid-19 because it is still with us,” she said.
The minister made the remarks on Friday at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds as she handed over to TVET principals vehicles bought by the government under the Uganda Skills Development Programme.

At the function, 16 TVET institutions received vehicles to enable effective transportation of staff and learners, with the minister warning them not to be tempted and use them in unofficial business or for personal gain.
“Once the government gets more resources, we shall gradually see to it that more institutions are re-tooled with transport means. The current Uganda Skills Development Project (USDP) covers only 16 beneficiary TVET institutions around the country,” she said.
The beneficiary Technical Vocational Education Training Institutions are Uganda Technical Colleges (UTC); Bushenyi, Elgon, Lira, Bukalasa Agricultural College, Technical Institutes; Karera, Nyamitanga, Lake Katwe, Kaberamaido, Ora, Kitgum, Kalongo, Farm Institutes; Ssese, Rwentanga.
