KAMPALA: The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the twin bombings in Kampala that killed three people and wounded several others on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Telegram on Tuesday evening, IS said three suicide bombers took part in the attack.
“Uganda is one of the nations participating in the war against IS in Central Africa,” the IS message read.
The group also claimed responsibility for the attacks in Kampala and on a bus in Mpigi District last month.
Police spokesman Fred Enanga earlier said their CCTV cameras captured two suicide bombers on motorcycles disguising as boda boda riders around Parliamentary Avenue where one attack happened, while the third was seen carrying a bag around CPS, the scene of the other attack.
“Two suicide bombers were also captured on CCTV cameras, moving on motorcycles and disguising as Boda Boda riders, they detonated the bombs that killed them instantly along Parliamentary Avenue,” Enanga said during a press conference on Tuesday, 16 November 2021, in Kampala.
“The fresh footages on CCTV clearly indicate how a male adult, putting on a black jacket, and carrying a backpack, detonated himself. He died instantly, and the spillover effect caused additional injuries to police officers and other civilians within a radius of 30 meters,” he added.
Police said their intelligence indicates that the attacks were planned by militants linked to Allied Defence Forces (ADF), an outfit with bases in DR Congo.
“Our intelligence indicates that these are domestic terror groups that are linked to ADF. We have managed to counter several bomb threats in this country. The threat is against the lives of all Ugandans, from an enemy that we all know. Let’s work together to fight this threat,” Enanga said.
