KAMPALA: The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has urged residents of Kampala and surrounding areas to use their water sparingly after announcing that they will shut down the Ggaba water station on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.
According to NWSC, this is due to a planned power shutdown at the Ggaba Umeme power substation.
“Subsequently, water supply to the entire Kampala Water Supply Service Area will be affected during the works,” they said in a statement issued on Monday, 15 November 2021.
“The works are designed to improve power reliability at the station Customers are therefore advised to store water and use it sparingly as it takes time for the system to stabilize after a total plant shutdown. All inconveniences are highly regretted,” NWSC added.
The development comes after the completion of the construction of the new Katosi-Kampala water pipeline to boost water supply in Kampala Metropolitan area.
The pipeline added 160 million litres of water per day to the greater Kampala metropolitan area in a bid to solve the existing water scarcity, which was completed in May this year.
The 160 million litres from the Katosi plant will supplement the 240 million litres pumped by the Ggaba plant take push up the water supply per day to 400 million litres.
The current peak demand for water is 300 million litres per day, according to NWSC.
