KAMPALA: The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced that effective Thursday, November 11, 2021, it will begin emergency repairs on damaged sections at Lwera Swamp along Kampala—Masaka road.
UNRA said this will lead to disruption of traffic flow.
“Motorists are therefore advised to approach this section carefully. Actual works will be carried out between Tuesdays and Thursdays and the repairs are expected to be completed by Friday 03rd December 2021,” UNRA said in a statement issued on Wednesday, 10 November 2021.
“During this period, we expect some delays in traffic flow since one lane will remain open to traffic. Therefore, all motorists are advised to follow guidance from the Traffic Police on site Motorists may also use Mpigi—Kanoni—Sembabule—Villa Maria-Nyendo/Masaka road (175Km) as an alternative route,” it added.
In March this year, transport was paralysed for motorists plying the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara highway after a section of the road at Lwera swamp collapsed.
The highway had traffic gridlock stretching more than 20 kilometres between Lukaya Town in Kalungu District and Nabyewanga Town in Mpigi. The road collapsed after culverts that were used to fix it broke down.
Kampala-Masaka highway is one of the busiest highways in the country with an average daily traffic count of about 30,000 vehicles. It is the main gateway to DR Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
